Most of us have visited a tanning salon and enjoyed the occasional sunless suntan. My wife enjoys the tanning beds, but for me it is the spray tanning booth. I can still remember my first time, and it was an experience.

I am sort of like a biker dude, well more like Erik the Red, (cause of my skin tone) and I felt a little embarrassed going into a “tanning salon”. I figured I would man up, go in, get my spray tan and get the hell out before I was ever seen. Wrong! And I really I knew deep down it would not be that easy.

I know what you are thinking, why do I want a “spray tan” to begin with? It is because I live in Florida and we are supposed to look tan. You say, “you are in Florida, go to the beach!” Two problems with that. First, if it isn’t summer and the water isn’t above 80 degrees I’m not going and second (and the real reason) I have the skin type of a red head, meaning I do not tan but turn burnt red with freckles. With my skin type it just isn’t a good idea.

Back to my story. As I was waiting my turn to talk to the 12 year old working the front desk for a time that felt like an eternity, I kept thinking, bad idea, bad idea, just turn around and get out. Then I heard from the 12 year old, “Can I help you sir?” Too late now I had my chance. “Yes, I would like a spray tan please”. Then she asked “What number are you?” “What number am I?” I replied. “I guess number one since I’m the last one standing here”. No, what spray setting number are you? Have you ever been here before? No, is that a problem? Then she said “You have to watch a movie”. A movie for what? I asked. She said “To see what to do in the tanning booth”. “Go sit over there with them and I will put the movie on”. Them were three teenagers not old enough to drive but old enough to text the hell out of their cell phones. I watched the movie. I did not know you had to go through so much just for a spray tan.

Am I going to turn around around when I am supposed to? Am I going to have some places darker than the others because of the way I put on that lotion stuff? After the first perfect tan all the others looked fake. I tried another tanning salon. Same deal, fake. I looked like a carrot stick. I had given up and…
